Abstract

This article aims to analyze the phenomenon of professional discourse in modern linguistics, determine its types, structure, and relationship with LSP, with primary focus directed toward revealing the linguistic features of professional communication using medical discourse as an example. The main objectives of the study include comparing interpretations of the term “discourse” across various scientific approaches, identifying constitutive and institutional features of professional discourse, describing specific axiological and pragmatic aspects of medical discourse, determining differences between LSP and LGP, and evaluating the role of terminology in professional communication.
During the article analysis, descriptive methods, comparative-typological approaches, discourse analysis, and functional-semantic research techniques were employed. Drawing upon theoretical concepts of foreign and local scholars (Karasik, Beilinson, Picht, Foucault), the typology of institutional discourse was examined, which allowed for deeper understanding of professional communication mechanisms in various spheres of activity.
The principal result of the research demonstrated that professional discourse represents a comprehensive and multifaceted system, while language for special purposes serves not merely as a communicative tool but as a linguistic phenomenon reflecting professional values and ethical norms. Terminological density, semantic precision, and pragmatic orientation were identified as fundamental characteristics of medical discourse. The presence of deontological principles, significance of speech behavior, analysis of emotional components in the communication process between physician and patient, as well as mutual challenges in the speech process were thoroughly investigated.
It was demonstrated that medical discourse, as an integral part of professional discourse, constitutes not only an information exchange process but also a communicative phenomenon influencing complex life-and-death matters. Correspondingly, specific aspects of the LSP system were examined through the prism of professional competence, responsibility, and socio-cultural context. During the research, interdiscursivity was confirmed as an essential characteristic of contemporary professional communication, revealing the necessity for new interdisciplinary applied research in this field of linguistics.
