Abstract

Today, learning Arabic as a foreign language, which is considered one of the UN functioning languages, is becoming popular among language learners. Of course, learning the Arabic language increases the need for specialists not only for oral speech, but also for written speech skills such as the ability to express one's thoughts coherently in writing.
The main goal of our research was to show the specific aspects of this skill that differ from other languages, based on the definitions given by scholars to writing and written speech in Arabic.
The tasks of our article are to explain (1) the dictionary meaning of the term ةباتك”) kitaaba”), which means “writing” in Arabic, based on the opinions of Arabic linguists, (2) to analyze the differences and similarities between written and oral speeches, and (3) to show that the writing skill is related to other types of speech activity, and that writing serves as the basis for speaking, listening and reading in Arabic. In our study, we used the research works of Arabic scholars, as well as scientific literature and explanatory dictionaries, to analyze the terms “writing” and “written speech”. According to the results obtained during the research, since Arabic graphics have nothing in common with the writing of other foreign languages, we cannot rely on the skills related to writing in the languages previously learned by students in teaching Arabic writing. Also, if students do not develop writing skills in the early stages of the Arabic language acquiring, they will have difficulty in learning the remaining speech activities, because of the fact that writing is one of the foundations of learning Arabic.
