Issues of Adequacy and Equivalence: Translation Challenges Posed by Goethe’s Poetic Oeuvre

The issues of adequacy and equivalence in translation remain a focal point for translation scholars and researchers. Goethe’s works were translated into Uzbek by numerous translators. Researchers and scholars have conducted comparative philological studies of the challenges of translating poets’ poetry into Uzbek. An examination of existing research reveals that the question of adequacy and equivalence in the direct and indirect translations of Goethe’s works into the Uzbek language has not been thoroughly investigated, warranting further research on this topic. This aspect distinguishes the present study from other studies in the field.
This study investigated the adequacy and equivalence of translations of Goethe’s poetry into Uzbek. Considering the genetic dissimilarity between German and Uzbek, achieving adequacy in poetic translation poses a significant challenge for translators. Some scholars argue that the adequacy of the poetic translation from German to Uzbek is unattainable. To address these issues and propose solutions, the research tasks include observing the study process of adequacy and equivalence issues, analyzing research on poetic translation problems, examining Goethe’s work through the evolution of research, and investigating the adequacy and equivalence of translations of Goethe’s poetry into Uzbek.
This study employed a comparative method to analyze the research and scientific literature in three directions, and the results are summarized and analyzed. Descriptive and comparative analytical methods were used to examine opinions, literature, and scientific sources on this issue. Goethe’s poem translations underwent linguopoetic analysis, leading to general conclusions. These findings indicate that translating poetic works remains crucial in translation studies, with both content and form being significant in translating poetry.
