The Representation of Time-Expressing Ethnographic Units in the Translation of the “Baburnama”

The objective of this study is to examine the expression of temporal concepts in translations of the “Baburnama”. The research objectives are as follows: (1) to analyze scholarly works and theoretical studies pertaining to the concept of time; (2) to identify ethnographic elements related to temporal concepts in the original text and assess their treatment in translation. The study utilized comparative-contrastive analysis, componential analysis, descriptive, and classificatory methods, which facilitated a precise examination of temporal concepts.
Temporal notions in the “Baburnama” are articulated through borrowed terms and coined linguistic units by Z.M. Babur. These units capture characteristics of a historical period, time passage, and era-specific events. Attention was given to alterations of these expressions in French translation and their reflection of culture-specific transformations. A key challenge in translation is representing cultural and social nuances, as temporal units are linked to linguistic elements and connected with the life, traditions, and religious practices of that time.
Numerous temporal expressions in the text are conveyed through ethnographic elements associated with cultural concepts, such as prayer times, Hijri months, and days of the week. These elements offer insights into the social life, religious rituals, and daily activities of people in that historical context. Accurate translation of these units is essential to convey the full meaning of the original work. The translator must possess a profound understanding of the culture of that era and demonstrate cultural sensitivity to effectively communicate its subtleties to readers.
The study concludes that the application of rigorous research methods in analyzing temporal concepts enhances the cultural awareness of translators and the understanding of readers, thereby facilitating a comprehension of cultural nuances in Z.M. Babur’s work. The accurate representation of temporal concepts in the translation of the “Baburnama” significantly contributes to conveying the original content accurately and comprehensively.
