Exploring Parallel Corpus Applications in Linguistic Research and Translation Studies

The primary aim of this research is to ascertain the principal benefits of utilizing parallel corpora and evaluate their contribution to comparative linguistics and translation studies. The advent of parallel text corpora has expedited research in these domains, offering rapid access to authentic lexical unit usage. Moreover, parallel corpora facilitate precise analysis of linguistic phenomena, advancing the methodologies of comparative linguistics and translation research.
Consequently, the following research objectives are delineated: (1) to examine the history of the emergence of parallel texts, their developmental stages, types, and their significance in the field of translation; (2) to analyze translated units in parallel texts using the comparative method, focusing on their differences and similarities; (3) to elucidate the application of parallel corpora in translation theory by analyzing source texts and their translations into other languages at lexical, semantic, and discourse levels, thereby highlighting the role of parallel texts in the translation process and in enhancing intercultural communication; (4) to analyze the practical actions undertaken in the creation and adaptation of parallel texts.
To effectively achieve these objectives, the research article employs comparative and empirical analysis methodologies. Specifically, using A.A. Milne’s “Winnie-the-Pooh” as translated into other Germanic languages by D.V. Sichinova as a case study, the research examines how the present perfect tense is translated across different languages using a parallel corpus. Additionally, the advantages of employing parallel corpora in the training of future translators are enumerated.
Based on the findings of this research, it is concluded that parallel corpora are indispensable in determining the adequacy of translated units and analyzing their usage patterns in native speakers’ discourse. Furthermore, parallel corpora can be recognized as a primary electronic resource in the development of translation methods by future translators and in enhancing the quality of automatic translation
