Contemporary linguistics increasingly studies language not only as a system of structural units but also as a living communicative, social, and cognitive phenomenon. Particular attention is given to phonopragmatics in identifying speaker intention, listener perception, contextual factors, and subtle differences in meaning. Phonopragmatics examines pragmatic meanings expressed through sound and intonation, addressing not only “what is said” but also “how” and “for what purpose” it is said.
The aim of the study is to clarify the concept of phonopragmatics, determine its position within pragmalinguistics, and establish its relationship with phonostylistics. The objectives include identifying the universal and differential features of pragmatics and pragmalinguistics and comparatively examining the common and distinctive characteristics of phonopragmatics and phonostylistics.
The methods include terminological description, comparative analysis, analysis, synthesis, linguistic observation, and interpretation. Particular attention is paid to the pragmatic functions of prosodic devices in actual speech, including intonation, pauses, stress, tempo, and tone.
The findings demonstrate that pragmatics is a broad linguistic field, whereas pragmalinguistics is a specialized area concerned with the pragmatic functions of linguistic units. Phonostylistics focuses on the stylistic and genre-related properties of sounds, while phonopragmatics examines pragmatic meaning changes determined by context and communicative situation. Phonopragmatic devices play an important role in expressing the speaker’s attitude, emotional state, and communicative intention. Changes in intonation, stress, pauses, and tempo may assign different pragmatic meanings to identical linguistic units in Uzbek speech. These findings confirm the relevance of phonopragmatics to theoretical research and practical speech communication.
The conclusion establishes phonopragmatics as a promising interdisciplinary field that explains pragmatic meaning through prosodic devices. Its findings have potential applications in artificial intelligence and voice systems, public speaking, psychological speech analysis, and language teaching.
