Aphorisms have been deeply rooted in human consciousness, lifestyle, and culture since ancient times and, like proverbs and sayings, hold significant importance. They are viewed as a means of revealing human inner experiences, thoughts, and perceptions of the world, helping to comprehend reality, and are widely used in literature. Literary aphorisms play an important role in uncovering the author’s concepts and ideas about such notions as life, love, death, friendship, and others. This research comprehensively investigates the linguopoetic and cognitive features of aphorisms.
The main aim of the study is to reveal the artistic and aesthetic essence of aphorisms and to analyze their semantic, stylistic, and cognitive potential. For this research, more than 60 aphorisms by authors such as O. Wilde, V. Woolf, W. Blake, S. Johnson, and G. B. Shaw were selected and analyzed. The analysis demonstrates that aphorisms encompass the categories of imagery, emotiveness, and evaluation, which serve as stylistic criteria; these categories are expressed through various stylistic devices such as metaphor, antithesis, paradox, allusion, oxymoron, and epithet; and that aphorisms play a crucial role in revealing the metaphorical nature of human thinking.
The study employed linguopoetic analysis, cognitive semantics, conceptual metaphor theory, and conceptual blending model as its methodology. The results showed that aphorisms, in a concise form, carry deep semantic and emotional meaning, reflecting the author’s evaluative stance, philosophical views, and socioaesthetic perspectives.
The findings suggest that aphorisms not only enrich the expressive layer of literary texts but also have the power to stimulate readers’ thinking and provoke discussion. These results open opportunities for further in-depth research of aphorisms in linguopoetic and cognitive aspects, as well as their effective application in translation, stylistics, and speech culture classes.
