This article provides a detailed analysis of Amy Tan's novel, The Joy Luck Club, using the frameworks proposed by renowned narratology theorists Gerard Genette, Paul Ricoeur, and Zhao Yiheng. These scholars have contributed significant insights into narrative analysis, particularly regarding concepts such as narrative perspective, narrative layering, narrative time, temporal order and duration, frequency, mood, and order. By incorporating the theoretical perspectives offered by these scholars, this article aims to carefully examine the complex narrative dynamics within The Joy Luck Club.
This work aims to analyze the complex artistic narrative techniques used in The Joy Luck Club. The novel tells the story through the unique firstperson perspectives of four mothers and their four daughters, interweaving a rich tapestry of interconnected stories that evoke the essence of a Chinese mahjong game. The book is divided into four distinct sections, each containing four compelling stories. Rather than following a single narrative layer, these stories are ingeniously structured in a multi-layered embedded format. Each section begins with an engaging parable, enhancing the narrative depth and symbolism. By carefully examining each story in isolation and their collective impact, it becomes clear that the story and narrative order intentionally diverge, resulting in a thought-provoking anachronistic effect. Furthermore, the skillful use of scenes and ellipses, along with the deliberate repetition of certain stories, significantly contributes to the overall narrative tapestry. These carefully crafted narrative strategies effectively accentuate and underscore the thematic ideas that run throughout the novel.
