Abstract

This research article delves into the writing techniques used by Thomas Harris, a renowned American psychological thriller writer. Despite receiving both constructive and unconstructive criticism from reviewers and authors alike, T.Harris has managed to create suspenseful and psychologically rich narratives in his Hannibal Lecter novel series. The main objective of this research is to analyze how T.Harris manipulates time units and geographical locations within his writing to enhance the psychological depth of his characters. Additionally, the research aims to investigate the impact of historical chronotopes on the overall atmosphere of his thrillers, drawing upon M.Bakhtin’s “chronotope” theory.
This research article aims to achieve certain objectives by using a qualitative analysis approach. The analysis will focus on T.Harris’s four thriller novels by closely examining the motifs and patterns related to M.Bakhtin’s chronotopes. The study will include identifying the temporal and spatial configurations that shape character interactions and psychological dynamics, examining character psychologism within different settings, and exploring how temporal shifts in chronotopes contribute to the narrative structure.
The study shows that the concepts of time and space are crucial in shaping the psychological landscape of T.Harris’s novels. Harris strategically uses these elements to heighten suspense, evoke mood, and deepen character development, setting his work apart from other detective or thriller writers. The research also emphasizes the interconnection between time, space, and psychological themes in Harris’s storytelling. As a result, it concludes that they are essential compositional elements in T.Harris’s Hannibal Lecter novel series, serving as powerful tools for crafting immersive and captivating narration. Understanding the role of space and time in T.Harris’s works provides valuable insights for researchers into the ways authors use setting and temporal structure to enhance the psychological impact of their stories.
