Phraseological units with a zoonymic component play a significant role in linguistics. The main aim of the article is to investigate the comparativeness of phraseological units containing a zoonymic component in both English and Uzbek languages. The tasks include clarifying the basic concepts of phraseology, finding similarities and intricacies in the use of phraseological units with a zoonymic component between the two structurally different languages, and understanding the cultural and national specificities of the speakers of the compared languages based on determining the connotative meanings of the analyzed phraseological units. Following that, this research employs a comparative analysis approach, descriptive method, dictionary definition analysis method, and componential analysis, combining quantitative analysis of phraseological units with qualitative insights into their cultural significance.
The research literature on animal names as a component of phraseological units in English and Uzbek has been investigated. Differences and similarities in the structural features of English and Uzbek phraseological units with a zoonymic component have been identified. The main conclusions can be drawn as follows: despite the different structures of the compared languages, the correspondence of structural types such as verbal, substantive, adjectival, adverbial, and interjective have been revealed. The group of verbal phraseological units with a zoonymic component is the most numerous in the languages involved. Among the substantial components, in the group of adjectival, verbal, and adverbial components of the languages, structural models of the same type are identified. At the same time, in the case of the identification of non-predicative adverbial and interjective phraseological units, there are many unresolved issues, mainly related to the “problem of lexicographic extension” and the basic principles of lexicographic fixation of phraseological units.
