The “Lost Generation” refers to literary writers who emerged in Western European (American) literature after the First World War. It is important to categorize them based on whether they participated in the war or not, and to deeply analyze how the complexities of wartime are reflected in their works, along with the changes in the mindset of the main characters, particularly the female figures, in the context of “war and women”.
This study aims to explore the unique artistic portrayal of women in English “Lost Generation” literature through the works of Richard Aldington and Vera Brittain. Specifically, the study seeks to achieve the following objectives:
1. Investigate the artistic expression of “Lost Generation” writers, including their talent, typification style, and ability to depict reality through emotional perception, and analyze the portrayal of women both at the front lines and back home.
2. Provide theoretical evidence of the unique and universal aspects of European and American “Lost Generation” literature in describing characters’ lives before and after the war, considering authors who experienced the war and those who did not.
3. Analyze the breadth of thoughts, ideas, and imaginations in the works of R.Aldington and V.Brittain, and their erudition in creating an associative image of women through artistic thinking, spanning different times and spaces.
The research used comparative-typological, cultural-historical, biographical, psychological, and structural analysis methods to implement the defined tasks step-by-step. The results indicate that the formation of traditions promoting healthy gender relations can be traced back to events related to the First World War.
In conclusion, the research conducted on the writing style and artistic skills in the works of R.Aldington and V.Brittain and the characteristics of “Lost Generation” literature in both creators' poetic and prose works are original for their time.
