The purpose of this article is to explore how Ursula K. Le Guin’s Zulmatning chap qo’li(1969) employs elements of the fantasy genre within the framework of speculative fiction, its place within the genre, and its critical stance towards societal norms. The article analyzes how fantasy stylistic features are formed in the work, how it challenges traditional genre boundaries, and how it presents innovative approaches to contemporary issues such as gender, identity, and cultural relativism.
The problem addressed in the article concerns the expansion of the traditional fantasy genre and speculative fiction boundaries in The Left Hand of Darkness, as well as how the work introduces innovative ideas within its social and cultural context. Through this, Le Guin’s work is identified not only as a fantastic narrative but also as a unique piece of social criticism and cultural reflection.
The article applies methodologies including structural, thematic, and symbolic analysis of the literary text, supported by literary theory and genre studies approaches. These methods reveal the deeper layers of meaning within the work.
The main findings show that Le Guin utilizes classical fantasy elements—such as a rich and complex world, mythological layers, and symbolism—to address issues of gender stereotypes and personal freedom within society. As a result, the article emphasizes that Zulmatning chap qo’liis not only an outstanding fantasy story but also a literary work of great importance that critically engages with social norms and deeply explores cultural and social issues.
