This article examines the genre of antiutopian literature and its significance in contemporary literature, as well as its influence on human cognition and societal evolution. The article conceptualizes antiutopian literature as a mechanism for cautioning humanity within the context of globalization, reflecting the potential erosion of human values such as liberty and individuality. The article explores the historical development of the utopian genre, commencing with T.More’s “Utopia”, its conceptualization of an “ideal society”, and its evolutionary process.
The article analyzes the function of antiutopian literature in alerting readers to the potential negative consequences of humanity’s future and social systems by accentuating and amplifying perceived threats. This genre addresses issues about freedom, control, individuality, technology, and the preservation of human uniqueness, and through the exploration of these issues, it serves as a cautionary narrative about potential societal risks. The research methodology employs structural analysis, historical-cultural analysis, classification, and descriptive analysis techniques.
In the 20th century, this genre was associated with capitalist monopolization, totalitarianism, and the utilization of technology as a mechanism of control. Authors such as Y.Zamyatin, G.Orwell, and A.Huxley, through their antiutopian works, analyze future risks and encourage readers to critically consider the construction of the future. Furthermore, the article examines the cautionary and explanatory functions of the genre based on L.T. Sargent’s definition of antiutopian literature. This research not only elucidates the social and literary significance of antiutopia but also presents key approaches for assessing its impact on contemporary society.
The primary conclusions of the study suggest that the radical ideas about the future of the existing world in antiutopian works are predominantly dependent on the author’s representation of time and space. Through these works, various threats and risks in contemporary society are illuminated. These conclusions provide a methodological foundation for analyzing other antiutopian works.
