Abstract

In contemporary language education, authentic materials are widely recognized as an effective means of promoting language acquisition in real-life contexts and developing intercultural competence. Among them, authentic video materials are particularly valuable because they expose learners to natural language use and facilitate the contextual understanding of linguistic units. Accordingly, this article aims to demonstrate the significance of authentic video materials in enhancing foreign language instruction and to highlight effective approaches to their integration into the educational process.
Furthermore, the study examines the theoretical and methodological foundations of authentic video materials, analyzes their current use in English language classes at higher educational institutions, identifies existing challenges, and proposes methodological requirements for their improvement. It also develops and implements a system of lesson plans based on a specially designed instructional model and evaluates its effectiveness through pedagogical experimentation and statistical analysis of students’ oral communicative competence.
To achieve these objectives, the study introduces the Video-Based Integrated Competence Development (VICD) model, which combines linguodidactic, linguopsychological, and pragmatic dimensions of authentic video materials. Based on this framework, the Authentic Video-Based Communicative Learning (AVCL) system and the Video-Mediated Communicative Interaction (VMCI) approach were developed. The findings confirm that the integration of authentic video content effectively enhances learners’ listening comprehension, oral discourse skills, pragmatic competence, and intercultural communicative competence.
Moreover, experimental research was conducted at three educational institutions located in different regions of the country. Comparative analysis of pre- and post-experimental results, supported by mathematical-statistical procedures, revealed positive growth in students’ language performance. Consequently, the study concludes that authentic video materials represent a highly effective linguodidactic resource, enabling learners to engage with authentic speech samples and observe the natural use of phonetic, lexical, and pragmatic features in real communicative contexts.
