Abstract

This study performs a comparative analysis of symbolic meanings attributed to eye in Spanish and Uzbek literary works. The objectives include identifying and categorizing principal symbolic dimensions of the ‘eye’ motif across cultural and historical contexts, conducting comparative analysis of their manifestations, establishing intertextual connections, and comprehending the ‘eye’ motif’s function in constructing literary meanings.
The research methodology employs comparative textual analysis and associative connections. In the course of analysis, the works of authors such as F.G. Lorca, M. de Cervantes, and P.Neruda from Spanish literature, alongside A.Navoi, A.Kadiri, Cholpon, and E.Vahidov from Uzbek literature, were examined. The analysis was conducted through stages of meticulous reading, contextual analysis, thematic coding, comparative analysis, and interpretative synthesis.
As a result of the research, ten primary symbolic states of the ‘eye’ motif were identified: 1) the reflection of the soul and the inner world; 2) a symbol of enlightenment, knowledge, and spiritual awakening; 3) a symbol of love and romance; 4) associations with nature and universal concepts; 5) a means of expressing fear, surprise, and panic; 6) a source of proverbs, expressions, and folk wisdom; 7) expression of mental and physical states; 8) a means of expressing the social and spiritual status of an individual; 9) use in artistic images and figurative meanings; 10) a means of expressing cultural and national characteristics.
In conclusion, research findings show that while the ‘eye’ motif reflects cultural and historical variations, its meanings transcend eras, genres, and literary traditions. In both Spanish and Uzbek literature, concepts of love, wonder, perception, and knowledge are conveyed through eyes, and these associations contribute to understanding figurative perception and poetic comprehension in national thought. This is significant for understanding national literature and culture, and preserving national values.
